Valsartan

Dedicated Traverse City Product Liability Attorneys Handling Complex Cases Involving Dangerous Drugs

Valsartan is commonly used as a medication to treat high blood pressure. And while the drug is effective at lowering patients’ blood pressure, recent studies suggest that certain drugs containing Valsartan are linked to cancer. Of course, patients who were prescribed and took Valsartan were not informed of this possibility, depriving them of making an informed decision about their health.

Now, many patients who have experienced cancer diagnoses and other serious conditions have begun filing Valsartan lawsuits seeking compensation for what they’ve been through. At the Neumann Law Group, we are offering free consultations to anyone who took Valsartan and subsequently developed a life-altering medical condition as a result of this dangerous drug. With our help, you can effectively pursue a claim for compensation against the manufacturer of Valsartan.

What is Valsartan?

Valsartan is a member of a class of drugs that includes Losartan and Irbesartan. The medication was widely used for a number of conditions. It is an initial treatment for high blood pressure. The medication is also used to treat heart failure, although there is contradictory evidence regarding its efficacy. For people with Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure or albumin in the urine, valsartan is used to slow the worsening and the development of end-stage kidney disease. The drug was patented in 1990 and came into medical use in 1996. In 2016, there were in excess of eight million prescriptions for Valsartan.

Several generic drugs containing Valsartan are now available in the United States. As a generic medication, medications containing Valsartan are widely manufactured overseas in such countries as China and India. Unfortunately, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has found that extensive amounts of the Valsartan drugs made by generic manufacturers contain nitrosamine impurities such as N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA).

What Are the Dangers of Taking Valsartan?

The chemicals contained in generic versions of Valsartan may have the potential to cause cancer and/or serious liver damage, prompting widespread recalls published by the FDA. As recently as November 13, 2019, the FDA issued a warning letter to several manufacturers of valsartan that their manufacturing processes were deficient. Multiple warning letters to various manufacturers have been issued since July of 2018 when the FDA published the first recall.

Exposure to NDMA can cause cancer of the stomach, liver, bladder, small intestine, esophagus, prostate gland, kidney, or pancreas. Other types of cancer may also result from exposure, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma, and leukemia.

Is There a Valsartan Lawsuit?

Yes, recent lawsuits suggest that some medications containing Valsartan might contain potentially carcinogenic impurities, going back to 2012. However, not all medication with Valsartan listed as an ingredient are affected. Those receiving treatments from possibly contaminated batches should have been notified around July 2018 about whether their specific lots of Valsartan were subject to recalls. Those who took contaminated Valsartan and later experienced any adverse effects or injuries might be eligible for compensation.

If you or a loved one was taking Valsartan drugs on the list of potentially tainted lots and have suffered an injury, contact one of the experienced dangerous drug attorneys at Neumann Law Group for a free consultation.
