Paragard/IUDs

The Paragard IUD is a non-hormonal, long-term birth control device, which prevents pregnancy through a reaction caused by copper contained in the device. Since the device works without relying upon the release of hormones, it remains effective without disturbance for a very long time—up to 10 years. Moreover, the product is highly effective, preventing 99% of pregnancies in those receiving treatment.

Implanted birth control devices such as the Paragard IUD are growing in popularity as a reversible contraceptive. However, women have reported serious medical complications surrounding their usage. Upon implantation, the device can perforate or damage the uterus, leading to infection and scarring. ParaGard may cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, an infection of the uterus, tubes and nearby organs. When the device is removed, it can fracture or break during the procedure and seriously injure the patient. If the device is damaged during removal, the patient may require additional surgery to successfully extract it. In rare cases, a hysterectomy may be necessary.

In addition, if the device is ineffective as birth control, there is an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, a dangerous condition that must be treated immediately. Ectopic pregnancy is the leading cause of maternal death in the early stages of pregnancy. The manufacturer of the Paragard IUD may be liable for failure to warn users of the health risks associated with the device.

If you or a loved one has experienced any of the symptoms described above while using an UID for birth control, you may be entitled to compensation. Contact the experienced attorneys at Neumann Law Group for a free consultation.
