Ozempic and GLP-1 Drug Vision Loss Lawsuits

New cases are now being filed against the manufacturers of weight loss GLP-1 drugs, including Ozempic, due to the development of a significant eye condition called NAION or non-arterial anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. Neumann Law Group’s product liability attorneys are now actively investigating and presenting claims for those who have suffered from NAION as a result of using GLP-1 drugs. The U.S. Judicial Panel has created a new MDL (Multidistrict Litigation) for claims involving those who have suffered from NIAON, separate and apart from the lawsuits against these drug manufacturers for gastrointestinal issues.

Patients and doctors are finding that these drugs cause permanent vision loss due to injury to the optic nerve. The Courts have concluded that these injuries are widespread and common enough to warrant a new lawsuit for those who have suffered from eye injuries that have no known cure or treatment.

As we previously discussed here these medications were initially approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of those with diabetes to help produce insulin and lower blood sugar, but doctors and consumers found that GLP-1s are also effective in weight loss, and many began prescribing them for this purpose. A study in JAMA’s Ophthalmology Journal found that those who have used GLP-1 drugs are at a higher risk of developing NAION than those who were prescribed alternative diabetes control medications.

Just like with GLP-1 induced gastroparesis, the manufacturers of GLP-1 drugsfailed to warn patients or their doctors of the potential for eye injury in taking these medications. We predicted and were correct that damage to patients by these GLP-1 drugs have now led to additional legal claims.

What Is NAION?
Non-Arterial Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy

NAION is a rare, painless condition and often those suffering from it will not know until it is too late. Restricted blood flow to the optic nerve can result in sudden and permanent vision loss and unfortunately, there is no effective treatment for NAION. Although not life-threatening, it is life-altering. Those who have lost their vision as a result of NAION will often require assistive supports including magnification aids and voice commands and feedback on their devices. Just like gastroparesis, there is no cure for NAION, and your treatment options are limited.

It is vital that you are aware of the symptoms leading up to development of NAION including loss of vision in the mornings, shadows in your vision, blurring, color vision loss, light sensitivity, and headaches.
