FreeStyle Libre Glucose Monitor

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a safety alert and recall of certain models of Abbott’s continuous glucose monitors for providing dangerously inaccurate glucose readings. Thousands of people suffering from diabetes rely on continuous glucose monitors to keep a close eye on their glucose levels without the need to test blood from a finger stick. These tools are a major advance in diabetes testing, allowing for permanent, constant, and pain free monitoring. Unfortunately, faulty sensors in the FreeStyle Libre and FreeStyle Libre Plus models have misled patients, causing potentially deadly consequences. To date, there have been at least seven deaths related to the faulty sensors and hundreds of other incidents reported by patients.

Certain models of the FreeStyle Libre monitors have been found to show inaccurate low blood sugar levels. Diabetics rely on these numbers in order to take corrective action to regulate their blood sugar. When patients are provided with inaccurate readings, they may make the wrong decision with respect to their health at no fault of their own. They may skip or reduce necessary insulin doses, alter their diet to compensate for low blood sugar that is not truly low, or potentially miss dangerously high blood sugar levels as a result of the faulty sensors. Serious complications can arise such as hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney damage, vision damage, and at times, death.

If you have a FreeStyle Libre or FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitor, it is imperative that you identify whether the model you have has been recalled. You can find that information here.
